The short answer
- Njangi — the English/Pidgin term, dominant in Anglophone Cameroon.
- Tontine — the French term, dominant in Francophone Cameroon and much of West/Central Africa.
Both are types of ROSCA (Rotating Savings and Credit Association).
Where they can differ
- Rotating tontine — pure njangi: contributions pooled, paid out in turns.
- Accumulating tontine — money is saved and shared out later (often in December), sometimes with small loans and interest between members.
Which should you run?
For most groups the mechanics are identical — pick the name your members know. What matters far more is clear rules and reliable record-keeping, whichever term you use.
